Micro-Economic Development Foundation

General Information

Bothothari  Foundation is a non- profit- making, non- governmental, non-political  organization registered under Attorney General Chambers here in Botswana. Our mission is to help very poor people involved in micro-enterprises nationwide take the first steps out of poverty by providing conditional seed capital, business training, and support services essential to the launch or expansion of a micro enterprise. This proven social and economic empowerment model is implemented in partnership with local agencies and international donors.

Bothothari Foundation believes in people and their capacity to make a difference. We empower the Batswana poorest people to develop their potential and strengthen their communities. We pursue this goal in a way that encourages innovation and leadership, maximizes resources, and promotes communication and cooperation among all Bothothari Foundation constituencies.

Founded by Howard Thari in 2006

With the assistance of local agencies or international donors, P1000 (or its equivalent) of their own money, the Foundation intends to give ten people grants of P100 up to P200 to launch or expand their own existing microenterprises. The staff will provide them with Bothothari Foundation business plans and reports to track business expenses and earnings. Business activities range from selling vegetables to selling eggs, sweets, jams, fruits, quik phone recharges and, the list goes on and on.  Some of those businesses are operating today!  It will definitely boost them positively in terms of quality of life improvements for our entrepreneurs.  Like this, the Bothothari Foundation was born

Potential Donors

The selection criteria of eligible beneficiaries for our funding is licensed micro-entrepreneurs with less and only less than P 200 overall stock. Bothothari Foundation economics began when the founder considered the problems facing informal sector in Botswana after recognizing the large market share that they hold.  The project has the outstanding potential of being funded by different local and international donors e.g. American Embassy, China Embassy, Debswana, De Beers, French Embassy etc because of its missions and the Bothothari  Foundation economical philosophy.

Reason of existance

Bothothari Foundation outreach began when the founder visited to one of the Botswana poorest families, in different parts of the country.  The Founder recognized what other poverty alleviation programs were missing: that even the Botswana lowest income people have entrepreneurial potential.  The model created is simple, but effective.
